Venkatesan Ramani, who retired from the Indian Administrative Service, has three decades of experience in public service and has worked in various capacities in the Governments of India and Maharashtra as well as in the Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

An economist by training and a law graduate, he has a strategic understanding of the working of government structures at the national, state and local levels. He has handled public policy issues in areas ranging from rural development to urban infrastructure, finance, revenue, energy, health and nutrition. He has been involved in a number of major policy initiatives,including the opening up of the petroleum sector to private investment, preparing a blueprint for urban property taxation and reducing malnutrition in children less than six years of age. A prolific writer, he has been bringing out, since the last 5 years, a regular blog on public policy issues (The Gadfly Column) and has contributed articles to a number of newspapers and journals.

He currently runs a firm which advises governments, companies, international organizations and nonprofits on strategies to promote inclusive growth.
